Pays de Papier. Livres de voyage
By David Martens and Anne Reverseau, preface by Xavier Canonne
This catalogue (192 pages) accompanied the exhibition "Pays de Papier" held at the Musée de la Photographie in Charleroi from 22 May - 25 Sept. 2019. Sponsored by MDRN and curated by David Martens and Anne Reverseau, the exhibition brought one of the richest displays so far of modern and modernist francophone photobooks devoted to countries and cities. Like the exhibition, the catalogue pays attention to canonised photographers (from Brassaï and Cartier-Bresson to Krull) and well-known writers (Cendrars, Cocteau, Morand, ...) as well as to lesser known figures. It thereby demonstrates the key role played by 20th-century photobooks in the construction of nations' projected self- and other-image.
